Nearly a century in the making: the origin of Zivolife

The nutrition industry has no shortage of origin stories. Most of them begin in a marketing meeting.

Zivolife's origin is categorically different. It begins nearly a century ago, on the edge of an alpine lake, and it takes almost a hundred years of observation, science, and persistence to arrive at a single patented strain of microalgae growing in the Peruvian desert.

This is that story.

1933. A lake.

In the early 1930s, a group of entrepreneurs noticed something unusual about the communities living around a particular alpine lake. The incidence of certain chronic conditions among the local population appeared notably lower than in surrounding areas. The observation was informal, the era pre-scientific in the modern sense, but it was enough to prompt a question: what was different about this place?

The answer they settled on was the water.

Samples were collected and transported to the United States, where they were cultivated and studied. The water was not pure in the laboratory sense. It was a polyculture, a living community of aquatic organisms including algae, fungi, and microorganisms that had evolved together in that specific alpine environment. Researchers worked with the whole community rather than isolating individual components.

The resulting preparation was consumed as a drink after the microorganisms were strained out, leaving a concentrated liquid. It was called Lebenszeit. In English, that translates as lifetime.

1945 to 1980. Cultivation and quiet persistence.

For decades, Lebenszeit remained what it had always been: a small-scale preparation passed between practitioners and enthusiasts who believed in it, without the scientific infrastructure to explain why it worked or the commercial scale to reach a wider audience. Cultivation methods were refined gradually. The product persisted.

It is worth pausing here to appreciate what that persistence means. This was not a venture-backed startup with a marketing budget. This was a preparation that survived for half a century on the conviction of the people who used it and the practitioners who recommended it, long before anyone could explain the mechanisms involved.

1980 to 2003. Commercialization.

In the 1980s, Lebenszeit was commercialized and brought to market under a new name. The polyculture from the original alpine lake remained the basis. Cultivation methods were standardized. The preparation was sold as a concentrated liquid, the microorganisms removed, consumed for its observed effects on energy, digestion, and overall resilience.

It reached a loyal but limited audience. Quality control at commercial scale proved difficult. The science to explain what was actually in it, and why it appeared to work, remained elusive. The product continued as something between a folk remedy and a functional food, respected by those who knew it, invisible to those who didn't.

2003 to 2016. The science catches up.

In 2003, a research and development company acquired the technology and began the work of turning decades of anecdotal observation into documented science. Human clinical trials were conducted. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Lipids in Health and Disease in 2007 (Oben et al., DOI: 10.1186/1476-511X-6-20) found significant improvements in cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, and inflammatory markers including CRP and IL-6 in participants over ten weeks.

For the first time, the preparation that had started as alpine lake water in 1933 had peer-reviewed human clinical evidence behind it.

2016 to 2023. Isolation, identification, and the patent.

The clinical results raised an obvious question: what, specifically, was responsible?

Years of research narrowed the answer. Within the polyculture that had traveled from an alpine lake to the United States and survived nearly a century of cultivation, one organism emerged as the primary bioactive component. It was Klebsormidium flaccidum.

To understand why that identification matters, you need to go back considerably further than 1933. More than 500 million years ago, a microalgae made the transition from water to land. That transition is the origin of every plant that has ever existed on earth. Klebsormidium flaccidum is the living organism at that evolutionary boundary, retaining the biochemical characteristics of both kingdoms. It is not spirulina. It is not chlorella. Those are familiar names in nutritional science, but they occupy a different branch of the evolutionary tree entirely. Klebsormidium flaccidum sits at the point where aquatic life became terrestrial life, and its nutritional profile reflects that: compounds, bioactives, and structural complexity not found in any other commercially available microalgae.

The entrepreneurs collecting lake water in 1933 had no way of knowing what they had found. It took nearly a century of science to find out.

The specific strain was isolated, registered, and given a designation: var. ZL01. Cultivation methods were developed from scratch to grow it as a pure, single-strain organism rather than as part of a polyculture. A dedicated facility was established in Ica, Peru, chosen for its extreme solar intensity, arid climate, and isolation from agricultural contamination.

In November 2023, U.S. Patent 11,806,375 B2 was granted, covering the production and application of Klebsormidium flaccidum biomass in food and nutritional applications. It was the formal recognition of what nearly a century of observation and decades of science had been building toward.

2024 onwards. Zivolife.

Zivolife is the commercial expression of that entire journey. One whole plant organism. One patented strain. Grown at a dedicated facility in Ica, Peru. GRAS certified. cGMP facility. Nothing added.

The organism that started as an observation beside an alpine lake in 1933 is now a rigorously tested, fully characterized, commercially available whole food. The only one of its kind, in fact.
